Pull Through Connector Case Study

Floating (production) storage and off-take vessels are being used extensively for development of oil and gas fields offshore.

Vessels that are moored using buoy turret systems such as supplied by APL, an NOV company, have typically 12 mooring lines that connect the turret and the seabed.

Increasingly mooring lines need to be changed during the service life and many operators wish to be able to achieve this without having to disconnect the buoy from the vessel and in all cases to improve the efficiency of the mooring line change out and save significant time when doing so.

Challenge

Develop a robust, simple and easily connectable and disconnectable mooring connector for use in buoy turret and similar mooring systems where the disconnection of the vessel is not an essential part of the procedure.

The system also has to comply with the new classification society rules for mooring line accessories and approval of the forged material and the material qualification was all included within the project.

The system needs to be particularly rugged and highly fatigue resistant in what is a highly demanding load spectrum.

Improve

Existing systems focused on make-up of the connector and are also complex in terms of fatigue loading, require corrosion inhibitors and critically are not easily dis-connectable.

Our Pull Through Connector solution allows for simple make up and disconnection of the mooring line at the buoy utilising a temporary sheave. The system utilises a self-aligning, pin through hole system that utilises a simple trunnion block mounted onto the buoy. The male half of the connector is attached to the mooring line and then pulled through the centre of the female using a temporary sheave.

The innovative step is to align the pull in line with the mooring line so that when pulled in the male attached to the mooring line is self-centered and is able to align radially with the female. By aligning the axes of rotation at the pad eye on the male at 90 degrees to the axis of rotation at the trunnions on the female we obtain dual axis rotation and eliminate out of plane bending without the need for an additional uni joint.

Deliver

The system has been selected for use on Statoil’s Mariner and Enquest’s Kraken project. 26 connector sets have been delivered to APL Norway at the end of 2014
